Ngwenya Glass was originally set up in 1979 by Swedish Aid. After closing briefly in the 1980s the factory was reopened under the Prettejohns and now employs 70 workers. The master glassblower, Sibusiso Mlanga, trained under expert glass blowers in the USA and Sweden and has tutored new apprentices.
Only recycled glass is used by Ngwenya Glass. People from all over Swaziland collect bottles and are paid by the kilogram for clean glass. This in turn helps keep the streets clear of litter. Ngwenya Glass also organise environmental clean-up days by encouraging schools to clean in exchange for donations of building materials or football kits etc.
Ngwenya Glass also launched the Ngwenya Glass Rhino and Elephant Fund, with proceeds going directly to saving rare and endangered animals.
